EXPRESSING WISH ( PRESENT/FUTURE )
The
use of the verb Wish indicates that the speaker wants reality to be different.
Wish can also be used with Would to express a desire that someone do something
differently. Wish can also be told future if we form wish clauses using would
to express our wishes for the future to say one person’s desire to do something
different. When you say “ I Wish…” you are talking about something that you want but
probably will not happen, or you don’t think will happen. Like “ I wish I had a
million dollars.” It is different from the word hope.
1. Form Present
The past verb tense is used to talk about
the present. You can use wish + past simple to show
that you are not satisfied with a situation in the present. The past tense is
used to show that what you wish is not real - it is the opposite of the real
situation. Pattern of wish present:
Wish/es + Past Simple
Example:
1.
I wish today
were Sunday (but today is not Sunday)
2.
Nike wishes
rudi liked to hike (but she doesn’t)
3.
Leif wishes he
could speak Japanese fluently (but he can’t)
4.
I wish I spoke
Italian. (I don’t speak Italian)
5.
I wish I had a
big car. (I don’t have a big car)
6.
I wish I were
on a beach. (I’m in the office)
2. Form Future
On the other hand, we use ‘would’ with
‘wish’ in a little bit of special way. It’s generally used about other people
who are doing something that we don’t like and we want that person to change.
Wish + past simple is used to express that we want a situation in
the present (or future) to be different. Pattern of wish:
Wish/es
+ would/could/might
Example:
1.
Bella wishes
she would get an A in Statistics.(she might, but she doesn’t know yet)
2.
Keiza wishes
she husband would take her dancing tonight. (he might, but he might not)
3.
Sigurd wishes
she could study Spanish in Costa Rica next summer. (but he believes he can’t)
4.
I wish the
neighbours would be quiet. ( They are not quiet and I don’t like the
noise)
